How to Create Your Capsule Wardrobe

Sometimes getting dressed can be tedious and hard. We put one outfit on, and then another, and by the time we’re finally ready, we’ve changed our outfits four times. Getting dressed doesn’t have to be that hard. The key to making it easy: a capsule wardrobe.

Maybe you’ve heard about capsule wardrobes or read about them in one of our blogs and social media posts. In case you haven’t, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of accessories and clothing that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits. A capsule wardrobe is a great way to simplify your wardrobe and the difficult decision of what to wear. Not only will getting dressed be quicker and easier, but with a capsule wardrobe, you can save money, reduce stress, and declutter your closet.

Before beginning, refer to our blog, How to Hold onto that Piece that Everyone Says to Get Rid of, when decluttering and deciding if you want to keep items in your closet.

Define Your Style and Your Needs

Decide what kind of clothing you want to wear and what you plan to do. Think about your day-to-day activities, your social plans, and where you go most. You’re going to want to build your wardrobe around your daily routine. Think about your aesthetic as well. You might want to build a wardrobe that is soft, coquette, or old money, for example. You might also not have a single aesthetic, and you’re going to want your wardrobe to reflect that — don’t think that your capsule wardrobe can only be one aesthetic.

Choose a Cohesive Color Palette

Creating a cohesively colored wardrobe can help with mixing and matching pieces to create an outfit. Cohesive colors make pieces more interchangeable. Selecting a base color, like black or gray, picking neutral colors that compliment, and then adding one or two accent colors can help in creating a palette. It might be helpful to build a wardrobe around either warm or cool tones. Curate Key Pieces for Versatility

Select essential, versatile pieces that can work for multiple occasions. Try categorizing jackets, pants, and sweaters to see if there’s a theme or common patterns or textures. We recommend working toward a collection of 20 to 40 items in your capsule wardrobe. Your collection might vary in number of items if you live somewhere with multiple seasons that vary. You might also want to create a separate wardrobe for work. Try to stick with pieces that are timeless, versus trendy pieces that you don’t see yourself wearing a year or two from now.

Remember, our stylists can help you build your capsule wardrobe, identify items in your existing wardrobe you can build around, and create outfits out of clothes you have. Book an appointment to help curate your capsule wardrobe.
