What is HyperPop & How You Can Incorporate it in Your Wardrobe
Hyperpop has slowly been gaining popularity, whether it’s in fashion or music. In case you haven’t heard of it, hyperpop is a mixture of Y2K, glitter, and a sprinkle of anime. You’ve probably seen hyperpop fashion on early 2000s Lady Gaga, TikTokers like Addison Rae, and musicians Grimes, Charlie XCX, and most recently Camila Cabello during her rebrand.
Hyperpop clothing involves glitter, bright colors, and psychedelic prints. The jewelry sparkles and has over-the-top jewels and detailing. When it comes to makeup, think of bright eyeshadows in fuchsia, blue, or green, long lashes, and sparkles. Hyperpop celebrates creativity and uniqueness.
Hyperpop has been around for a few years now, but celebrities and the rise of TikTok stars have been increasing its popularity from just a niche fashion aesthetic to more accessible. Hyperpop originated from EDM and mainstream pop, slowly going from music genre to fashion. Once a response to mainstream pop and fashion, hyperpop is now part of the mainstream.
Where to Start
Hyperpop has been embraced by Gen-Z and millennials post-pandemic, most likely for its ability as a creative outlet. As for brands to shop, hyperpop has lots of subgenres within it. Some high-end brands and seasons with hyerpop options are Moschino, MUGLER’s 2021 Fall/Winter collection, Marc Jacob’s Heaven Label, clothing from Gucci’s Love Parade show, and Pandora’s ME collection. Some of the best hyperpop pieces can be found by independent and small designers. Other brands that can fit the aesthetic are Juicy Couture, Von Dutch, and Vivienne Westwood. It’s easiest to start small with accessories and jewelry if you’re new to the aesthetic and want to try it out.
The beauty of hyperpop is how many subgenres are within it. You can dig deep in your closet or go thrift shopping for this trend. You can repurpose clothing you thought would never be back in style, and check out your mom’s closet if she was a style icon back in the day. Think of what the it-girls were wearing in the ‘90s and early 2000s: Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss, and of course the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley.
