How to Hold Onto That Piece Everyone Says to Get Rid Of

We all have that shirt, bag, or a pair of pants that no matter what, we can’t part with. Maybe they’re sitting at the bottom of our closet, wasting away. Or, possibly they’re on a hanger, staring us down every time we look for an outfit to wear. Sometimes they hold sentimental value, but what do we do if they don’t fit anymore? Regardless, there’s a reason they’re still in our closets and not in a goodwill pile. How do we hold on to pieces everyone tells us to trash, and how do we know when it’s time to part ways with it? That’s what we’re going to get into today.

The first thing to do is decide if the clothing still fits. Sometimes, we keep something as inspiration for weight loss, or we think we might grow into it. Other times, we need to face the fact that it doesn’t fit us anymore. Now, we’re not talking about jeans that are a little snug, we’re talking about the dress that hasn’t zipped up in over a decade. Once you figure out what fits and what doesn’t, you can sort your clothes into three piles: what fits, what doesn’t fit but holds sentimental value, and what doesn’t fit but can be donated.

Reimagine

For the clothing that still fits, and you don’t want to part with it, start thinking of ways to make it fresh again. In some cases, the clothing item might feel dated. Try mixing and matching it with other newer pieces. Pair an old top with some basic pants and trendy accessories. Remember, trends fluctuate so fast that a piece that is out of style might return in style in a few years.

Repurpose

For those sentimental ill-fitting items, try to discover a way to repurpose an item. There is a rise in popularity of taking items that are old and don’t fit, and turning them into other items. Some examples are patchwork jackets and throw blankets. You can combine multiple ill-fitting but sentimental items into one you can use. You can even try this yourself if you’re into sewing and repurposing.

If you’re not sure if something fits right, or you’re having trouble re-imagining old pieces in new ways, book a session with one of our stylists! They’re only three clicks away from helping you on your styling journey.
